Basic Oil Painting Supplies, and Suppliers

Here is my supply list. Call if you have questions, thanks, Patrick 206-322-5540
for Patrick Howe’s Painting Class
(Estimated cost: about $150. to $200.)

If you have your own supplies here are a few important things to know:
The size we work in for the class is 12” x 16”.
Turpentine, and Turpenoid is not allowed in my classes.
We work flat on tabletops, but you can bring a tabletop easel if you want.

Painting Surface
We will use canvas pads (Each pad contains 10 12” x 16” canvas sheets) Do not get “canvas paper”. It doesn’t work well.

Cardboard
We tape each loose 12” x 16” canvas sheet to a 16” x 22” piece of corrugated cardboard for easy
handling of the wet painting. Quantity: 4 (I have mine cut at Artist & Craftsman Supplies (see address below),
or you can cut up a large box.

Palette
1-12” X 16” paper palette pad.

Paints
I buy the best (Gamblin Oils) but the best are naturally most expensive. (If you know you are passionate and committed
to painting then buy Gamblin paints. There are other high quality professional brands available too. Consult
your art supply store.) If you are on a budget, inexpensive student grade paints would be perfectly fine for this
class too. Each manufacturer may have different names for similar colors.

Minimum Beginner Palette (Size: all 37 ML tubes)
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium Orange
Dioxazine Purple
Phalo Emerald
Ivory Black
Titanium Zinc White (either three 37ml tubes, or 1 large 150 ml tube)
(and any other colors that catch your fancy)

Extended colors (Not essential for this class but these are my extended palette).
Quinacrodone Magenta
Phthalo Green
Pthalo Blue
Sap Green
Permanent Green Light
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
(and any other colors that catch your fancy)

Refined Linseed Oil—8 oz. and container

Oderless Mineral Spirits (OMS) 16oz can.
Gamsol is the best
This is a solvent for cleaning brushes.
(Turpentine, and Turpenoid are not allowed in my classes)

Brush Cleaning Jar
Option 1: One pint, or one-half wide mouth pint, glass canning jar, with lid. (My preferred option).
Option 2: Or a “spring loaded” brush cleaning jar. Inexpensive but the problem with these is that the are not water tight, so may leak while transporting.

Brushes
(Each brush manufacture sizes their brushes differently. For example, a #8 brush size from one manufacturer might be 1/8” wide, and a #8 from another manufacturer might be 3/4” wide. So here I have indicate the size by the width of the bristles in inches, at the tip of the brush.

(Do not get the 'long' bristle Filberts, get the short bristle)
3/4” wide Filbert, bristle (for blocking in)
1/2” wide Filbert, bristle (for general strokes)
1/4” wide Filbert, bristle (for general brush strokes)
#2 or #3 Round Bristle (for details, highlights)

A “Filbert” bristle brush is a good, all around “work horse” brush.
You will also need a #2, #4 and #6 Bright (Great for crisp, sharp edges).

Clothing
Wear paint friendly clothes, (or an apron if you want)

Miscellaneous
You will need paper towels, the kind that tear off in half sheets are preferred.

Pencil/eraser/ Sharpener

1” masking tape

Straightedge
For drawing straight lines.

A measuring tape

Optional: Latex Gloves
(Any Drug store. I prefer Digitex Gold, Large size, green and white box. Gloves must fit loosely to not crimp your hands.)

Art Bin or tote bag (to carry your new paints and brushes in)
